How can I synchronize two columns in an Excel spreadsheet?

Hello! I am a bit inexperienced with Excel, but am using it to inventory the items in a food pantry. My column A is labeled "Item;" my column B is labeled "Shelf." The shelf number of the item listed in column A should be featured next to it in column B. Here's my problem: When I sort column A or B alphabetically, the information correlated to it in the adjacent column does not move. How can I synchronize the columns so they move together depending on which one I sort alphabetically?
