Are airport body scanners effective?

Am I right to predict that the religion from which the airtravel terrorists are mostly coming from will be the first to object to airport body scanners on the grounds that they show pictures that would arouse the view into wanting to have and are therefore against the religion. Am I also right to predict that western governments, Britain first, will allow the religion's travellers to opt out of airport body scanning, thus invalidating the whole technology?
